Li (Mary) Ma, Ph.D. has a doctoral degree from Cornell University. Her first book, Surviving the State, Remaking the Church: A Sociological Portrait of Christians in Mainland China, was listed as Ten Outstanding Books of Mission Research in 2017 by the International Bulletin of Mission Research. Other books by her include The Chinese Exodus; Religious Entrepreneurism in China's Urban House Churches; Christianity, Femininity and Social Change in Contemporary China. She also writes as a columnist for Chinese public media, including Caijing, Caixin, Jiemian, Initium, etc.
