Leonora Owsley '22 - Major Opportunities

Wheaton has allowed me to study biology, ethics, psychology, and language in a way that efficiently drives me toward the future. Coming to Wheaton I thought I’d have to put my ideal major aside because Wheaton didn’t offer it. Wheaton offers 34 majors within 19 departments, which is a fairly humble list compared to the waterfall of options I saw at other colleges. However I now know I brushed that list off too quickly, because the opportunities at Wheaton are far from humble. I’m a Psychology major with a minor in biology, but through Wheaton I’ve studied so much more.

Each major and program is clearly laid out in an internal system designed to allow students to plan their semesters and see their needs. All the professors double as advisors, and I’ve dropped in on professors of all kinds who then dropped everything to help me, even with small things like whether I should wait to take a class. Wheaton also has an interdisciplinary studies program ranked first in the nation by the Bachelor Degree Center. This program allows you to create a personalized major to study a specific topic and combine interests. I chose not to take advantage of this, but friends of mine who take this route never cease to amaze me with their studies. Wheaton’s liberal arts focus prepares you to enter the workforce by allowing you to pursue your passions within the context of a wholistic education.
