Kara Barlow '20 - Career Preparation

Going into college, I was excited but also apprehensive about pursuing an English degree. As a writing major, people always ask me, “What are you going to do with that?” At first, this question intimidated me. However, at Wheaton, I have discovered how many options I have. As a rising senior, I can answer the “What are you going to do?” question with confidence. During my time at Wheaton, I have acquired important experience tutoring, copywriting, editing, studying abroad, interviewing alumni, developing my LinkedIn account, and connecting with leaders from different organizations. And while the summer of 2020 has not turned out as any of us expected, my virtual internship with Wheaton has kept me on track with career preparation.  

In an English class freshman year, my professor asked us to write a vocational reflection. My classmates and I were required to research different careers for English majors and create a 4-year plan for our time at Wheaton. This plan included our goals and outlined the steps we would take to prepare ourselves for our future careers. Since that time, my college experience has taken unexpected twists and turns, including the decision to drop my Education double major, the necessity of graduating early, and COVID-19. But despite numerous setbacks, I still feel ready to step into the job market. My professors and the Center for Vocation and Career have helped me develop the skills necessary to achieve my goals.
