James Graham- He Was Not a Wheaton Alum

By: James Graham '22

As I sat over a hot cup of coffee in downtown Chicago early one Thursday morning last January, I began to appreciate more the investment I had made in myself by coming to Wheaton. Across the table from me was an up-and-coming young executive, only a handful of years out of college, freely sharing with me his counsel as a hiring manager on how to best position myself in years to come. He was not a Wheaton alumnus.  But he had readily agreed to see me largely because we had a friend in common who was, and his regard of Wheaton grads was very high.  Call it networking. Call it reputation. Call it God looking out for me. I call it all three, and there in between sips of my latte, I began to understand the reputation Wheaton enjoys out in the real world. Wheaton’s strong academic reputation, close proximity to Chicago, and, most importantly its generous network of alumni around the world enables students like me to stand upon the shoulders of those who came before. Be very clear: if you decide to attend Wheaton, it will cost you. But the investment you make in your future here will pay dividends in the quality of your mentorships, the vast network of Wheaton grads excelling in every conceivable field, the thoroughness of your preparation, and the high-level formation you receive personally, not just academically. And isn’t that what you are looking for?
