Jacey Gould - Intentional Community

By: Laurel Bacote

I transferred to Wheaton College for the second semester of my freshman year. I spent my first at a different Christian college. When I committed to that college, I thought I’d be there all four years. However, I didn’t connect with my fellow students. Everyone seemed to be similar to each other, and I didn’t feel like they wanted to get to know me. During fall break, I visited my sister at Wheaton, and I instantly recognized that Wheaton’s student environment was more welcoming and diverse than my previous school’s. Upon transferring, I got involved with Arena Theater and felt seen. People were interested in learning about me, and I wanted to know them. At Wheaton, my friends and I aren't all alike, and we’ve embraced each other's differences. I hadn't experienced this at the other college. I don’t know why God placed me at a different school before Wheaton, but I believe it was for a purpose. Maybe I needed to be there in order to appreciate the friends I’ve made at Wheaton and how they’ve shaped me. If you’re considering transferring to Wheaton, I recommend that you get involved with groups or activities once you arrive on campus. Don't hesitate to start meeting people and making connections. Wheaton attracts students that appreciate intentionality, and I'm confident that you’ll meet people that want to know you. Grab meals with peers and exchange phone numbers. Pursuing friendships isn’t easy, but the people you’ll meet will be so worth it!
