Shane Seaton M.A. '15 shares his experience at Wheaton and how it prepared him for his calling.

Why did you choose Wheaton?

I was interested in Wheaton College Graduate School because they offered great program options with a reputation for excellence. Once I met the Christ-centered faculty and learned how much they care for students I was hooked. I chose the Christian Formation and Ministry program with an emphasis in Outdoor Adventure Leadership because of the hands-on approach offered. This program gave me the opportunity to directly apply what I was learning in class through the Graduate Assistantship at HoneyRock.  This education went beyond hands-on, it involved my head, my heart, and my hands.

What skills have you learned from your program?

The CFM/OAL program taught me how to develop people through experiences in creation. I learned how to adapt to different teaching situations in order to promote transformation in people. In my current position I am constantly utilizing these skills whether I am teaching in a classroom or developing new programs. My goal is to challenge people holistically in order to help them grow. This holistic growth was one of the most difficult parts of Wheaton College Graduate School. The program goes beyond just thinking to feeling and doing. I learned how to critically think, I deepened my relationship with God, and I gained hard skills in multiple aspects from teaching to canoeing. This program helped me define my calling and gave me the skills and the passion I need to pursue that calling.

What advice can you give for students who are also considering the M.A. Christian Formation & Ministry: Outdoor Adventure and Leadership program at Wheaton College Graduate School?

If you are interested in learning from brilliant professors who care about you and would do anything to help you grow, then look no further than Wheaton College Graduate School. You should join the CFM/OAL program if you want to grow in your outdoor skills and learn how use these skills to draw people closer to God and one another. Just be prepared to be stretched in a challenging and loving atmosphere surrounded by the beauty of creation.
