Stephanie Gilsenan- Classroom to Career
by: Stephanie Gilsenan '21
“So, what do you want to do after you graduate?” I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me that question. My consistent response was “I’m not sure”. I decided to attend Wheaton because I knew that its strong academic program would prepare me for a wide range of careers after I graduated.
I took the course Contemporary Clinical Psychology as a junior at Wheaton to learn more about therapy as a career path. During two classes, my professor brought in Wheaton alumni who are therapists to tell us about their careers. The alumni shared practical tips about their career paths ranging from applying to and going through grad school to how many clients you should schedule in a day. One of the most interesting tips they shared was how much you have to market yourself to find clients as you start. One alumni shared about her experiences reaching out to local churches and schools to advertise herself.
The opportunity to get an insider perspective about the career path of a therapist was incredibly helpful to me. The information that our guests shared about their everyday life gave me a full picture of what life would look like as a mental health clinician.
In all of my classes at Wheaton, I have received incredible theoretical training that will equip me to enter “the world”. But I have found that experiences like this one are what sets Wheaton apart from other schools and allows me to enter my senior year confident in my career readiness.
