Stephanie Gilsenan - Why I Chose to Major in Psychology
I am the type of person that likes to plan as much as possible, so I remember feeling frustrated in high school not knowing what I wanted to major in at college.
I entered Wheaton as an undeclared psychology major and took Introduction to Psychology my first semester. I was passionate to learn about the ways that humans think and operate. My dream was to help people, even though I wasn’t sure what that would look like. As the semester ended, I knew two things: I loved studying psychology, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue a career in it.
Because of Wheaton’s Christ at the Core general education program I felt comfortable pursuing a major in psychology despite not knowing what I wanted to do after college. I knew that through Christ at the Core I would receive tools and experience that would be valuable to bring to any job after college. I have been able to take classes ranging from philosophy to statistics at Wheaton. These classes have not only opened my eyes to passions that I never knew I had, but they have also taught me how to problem solve and critically think in a variety of settings, preparing me with the soft skills needed to get a job after college.
Whether or not psychology ends up being my chosen career path, I know that both my major and my Wheaton education in general have prepared me to land a job right after graduation.
