McKayla Jin '23- Just Ask the Alumni

I never expected Wheaton’s alumni to play such a significant role in my future in the medical field. With a large percentage of graduates remaining in the Chicago area, I’m thankful for the many connections this network has provided me. The prominence of strong student-professor relationships at Wheaton has enabled me to complete a summer internship with my freshman biology professor and his former student.

For Externship Day, I met with an advanced practice nurse (APN) who currently works in the technology and information department at Rush Copley Medical Center. I shadowed her throughout the workday, asking various questions and observing specific roles within this particular hospital. In being able to experience and not just imagine my life as a nurse practitioner, I better understood the skills required and challenges to anticipate for this role.

The success of the college’s networking, organized by the Center for Vocation and Career (CVC), represents a fraction of the possible connections students have at Wheaton. Even amidst this pandemic, I’ve been able to interview several alumni and explore roles similar to their own. The practice of networking is crucial to any career, project, and/or individual. You never know when you’ll need some advice or a boost.
