McKayla Jin '23 - Finding My Callings
I did not understand the value of a liberal arts education until my freshman year at Wheaton, when I found my calling in two different directions. Since junior year of high school, I was set on a psychology major and hoped to research child development. Through taking courses that met gen-ed requirements, I was able to explore various fields of study that I would have previously dissuaded myself from.
Thanks to my public speaking class (and an inspiring professor), I discovered the world of communication, particularly interpersonal communication. My professor’s passion for rhetoric was contagious, challenging me to reconsider my goals for the future. With the smaller class size, I was able to better connect with and be mentored by him. Wheaton’s “Dine with a Mind” program encouraged a stronger relationship: in sitting down over a cup of coffee, we broke the traditional student-teacher barrier that often limits interactions in an academic setting. In our conversation, I shared with him my dreams to change the world in a way that was guided by vocation, leading me to where I am now. My passion for conversation and relationship building has melded together both majors of psychology and communication, and I will continue to refocus my dream as needed
