Leonora Owsley - Academic Abroad

I spent my elementary school years in Europe and hoped that college would give me the opportunity to go somewhere I’d never been before. I wasn’t sure if studying abroad was possible or wise given what I wanted to study, but I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at Wheaton and found that studying abroad is an easy, three-step process

There are dozens of study abroad programs offered through Wheaton’s Global Programs and Studies (GPS), which also accepts external programs. Students who want to study abroad tell the Director of Study Abroad, pick a program, and apply to GPS for off-campus study approval. Specific programs offered by GPS vary, with options spanning multiple disciplines and geographical contexts, from philosophy in Tokyo to history in Mexico, from ecology in New Zealand to theology in Jerusalem.

I applied to the Wheaton in the Holy Lands summer program, which is a competitive program that travels through Israel, Turkey, Greece, and Rome, depending on what the sociopolitical (and now medical) climate allows. The program was canceled for the summer of 2020 due to Covid-19, though Lord willing we will return to the program for the summer of 2021.

Study abroad programs are typically semester or summer courses; all relevant information is easily accessible on Wheaton’s website. Studying abroad at Wheaton is educational, fulfilling, and well worth the three easy steps.
