Laurel Bacote '21 - The Best of Both Worlds

One perk of campus being next to downtown Wheaton is that you get the best of both worlds: you get to live in a cute, suburban town, and you are also a 40-minute train ride from Downtown Chicago. Chicago is filled with numerous historical sites, museums, restaurants, theaters, and more. One of the most memorable moments from my freshman year was a trip I took downtown with friends. We spent practically the entire day in the city. Upon arrival, we enjoyed a brisk walk, courtesy of the beginning of autumn, to the Nutella Cafe. After we ate lunch, we joined the crowd of tourists surrounding the sculpture Cloud Gate, affectionately known as “The Bean,” and took photos. Then, in spite of the fact that I wore flats rather than sneakers, our group ventured to Navy Pier, which is a 27-minute walk away from Millenium Park. It ended up being worthwhile once we rode the ferris wheel and saw a view of the city from 196 feet in the air. I came back to campus that evening with tired feet and memories that are still vivid to this day. Whether you choose to go to Chicago to learn more about its history, to immerse yourself in its art, or to just have fun in a new town with new friends, I highly recommend you take advantage of its closeness to Wheaton’s campus (and wear the proper shoes when you do so).
