Laurel Bacote '21 - Chicago’s Vast Opportunities
By: Laurel Bacote '21
As a Communication major with a theater concentration, I love being close to Chicago because I have easy access to excellent live theatrics. Many people visit downtown Chicago and only know of the “Broadway in Chicago” auditoriums in the Loop. However, I’ve learned that theater in Chicago is so much more than that. During my first semester at Wheaton, I enrolled in a class called “Theater Survey”. For this class, we drove into the city on three occasions to watch professional productions. I saw incredible shows on both small and large stages. These trips helped me realize that I truly want to perform because I like the work, not because of the grandeur of some theater venues. Taking field trips with my theater classes has expanded my knowledge of Chicago’s theater scene and made me realize how many performance opportunities I was unaware of. Thanks to these trips I’ve made, I have a growing list of places to audition. While “Theater Survey” students in the fall may not get to see shows downtown due to Covid-19, theater will not be gone forever. It is only on intermission, so look forward to its return! Regardless of your major, I recommend that you look into the career and internship opportunities that could await you if you venture into Chicago. The city has so much to offer!
