Laurel Bacote '21 - Your Floormates; Your Squad
Participating in my floor’s activities during my freshman year largely helped me transition to life as a college student. I have very distinct memories of bonding with my floormates. We played getting-to-know-you activities during orientation and the first week of classes, such as choosing an adjective that matches the first letter of your name so we could memorize one another’s names. These sorts of games provided a great tone for the start of the year. I am grateful that acquaintances made during those weeks turned into friends as the year went on. This was made possible thanks to “floor dinner” on Mondays, “bro-sis dinner” with our brother floor on Fridays, and “tea time” in my resident assistant’s room. My RA’s excitement about fellowship encouraged me to be proactive and attend these events. The girls that regularly attended floor dinners and tea time also lived on my part of the hall, and they became my squad. The six of us have a Snapchat group chat called “The Squad” to this day. Even though we may have busier schedules now, and we don’t all live together, these girls are still dear to me. While this upcoming year’s floor activities may look different in light of COVID-19 precautions, as you approach freshman year at Wheaton, I highly encourage getting involved in floor activities as much as possible. Relationships are a key part of transitioning to college. Your floormates have the potential to become your extended family.
