Adventurous Thinking Gap Year
Kara Barlow - Gap Semester in Salamanca
In our global world, cross-cultural and foreign language skills are fundamental. My experience in Salamanca opened my mind to different perspectives, equipped me with cross-cultural and language skills, introduced me to another education system, and inspired me to pursue more opportunities abroad.
When I entered Wheaton, my dream was to study abroad in Salamanca, the site of a prestigious university and birthplace to some of the greatest works of Spanish literature. Although Wheaton does not have a semester-long program in Salamanca, I petitioned for a non-approved program that would facilitate my entrance into the University of Salamanca and received approval.
Because I took classes with Spanish students, I became bilingual and experienced Spanish culture in a unique way. I developed life-long relationships with classmates, won the favor and support of my teachers, and was even introduced to the rector of the University of Salamanca in person! When I went to my literature professor’s office to say goodbye after my exam, he took me on a tour through the city, explained parts of the city’s history, and brought me to a poetry conference where I was the only student present. Attending a poetry reading with professors at one of the most famous European universities was, to say the least, exhilarating. When I left Salamanca, I had gained so much more than academic learning. The friendship and experiences I took away from my study abroad experience continue to enrich me academically, personally, and spiritually as I prepare for a lifetime of learning.
