James Graham '22 - Arriving at Ogilvie Station

By: James Graham '22

Chicago’s biggest draw is arguably its sheer breadth of culture. Take the train from Wheaton to Ogilvie station, and you’re a few minutes’ walk away from Millenium Park and Downtown. Catch the world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in concerts? Done it. And you could too! Grab a bite afterward at any of a dizzying array of ethnic restaurants?  Of course; the only question is where to start (for me it's been Cuban). On a quest for the best coffee (like Intelligentsia) or the best art (like the incredibly diverse collections of the Art Institute)? Both are easily accessible (and the latter has amazing student discounts--even better). In Chicago, you can have plenty of experiences that will surprise and delight you. For me some of these have been night games at Wrigley and seeing Second City’s legendary improv.  Rising above all those have been volunteer trips to the city serving wonderful people at a food bank, or providing an extra pair of working hands for a day, or volunteering to help at the BGC’s Institute for Prison Ministries. Want more?  Another advantage of Chicago is connecting with the various professionals--including many Wheaton Alumni--who work in the different areas you might be studying. As a Business major, I jumped at the chance to interview in various professions, seeking to discover what their jobs and careers look like, while forming valuable connections along the way. You have chosen to attend a school next door to Chicago: take full advantage.
