Heidi Melo - Peace in the Whirlwind of Options

By: Shula Hui

I took my time looking for a school that I wanted to be on the campus of after spending a year taking general education courses online. I wanted to study the arts, but I also enjoyed the humanities and a variety of other subjects. Wheaton impressed me with how its liberal arts focus made education exciting. Anything can intersect with anything; I can apply and learn from classes like biology even if I’m an artist. Through the Christ at the Core program and the intentional interweaving of disciplines, I can connect multiple areas of study with my faith and utilize them in my field.

My major, Community Art, embraces working with others and creating art for the community, and its unique elements offer me interesting avenues of exploration as I consider how I can combine art and ministry. The art department is a hidden treasure at Wheaton. The professors care for the students, and they know their Bible and how that intersects with art, an overlooked topic in the church. I enjoy meals and conversations with them at the cafeteria. They make the department feel like home.

Through the people and experiences I encountered, God made it clear that He wanted me to attend Wheaton. He has promised to provide, so I can take life a day at a time and see where He leads.
