Grace Zheng '22 - Friendships in a Diverse Community

Building relationships helped me overcome the challenges I faced at Wheaton. Before attending college, I lived in China as an MK.  During that time, I encountered language and cultural barriers, so I did not form many deep friendships within my community.  However, my life turned 180 degrees when I came to Wheaton. I was immediately befriended by many of  Fischer Hall’s  5W girls.  I played games, watched movies, had deep conversations, and ate meals at Saga (Wheaton’s cafeteria) with them. These girls and I formed the Best of 5 West squad.

Ever since freshman year, the Best of 5 West has been my inner circle of friends. Since we are all unique, we learn so much from each other. We have shared countless stories of joys and sorrows in life. When we interact, people often think we are sisters. We have common interests, but we hold different viewpoints as well.

The Best of 5 West has also encouraged me to pursue the passions and gifts God has given me. During freshman year, I joined the Women’s Chorale and MuKappa (MK and TCK club on campus). These ministry opportunities helped me grow in my relationship with others and the Lord. The cross-cultural conversations at MuKappa and music performances at Women’s Chorale helped me appreciate serving among a diverse but united body of believers. Although I transitioned to different people’s personalities and skills at Wheaton, these opportunities have helped me develop patience and humility towards God and others.
