Amanda Miller- My Desire For Excellence

By: Amanda Miller '22

Despite the challenges (personal essay, I’m calling you out!), spending time applying to schools only gives you more freedom later. For someone as indecisive as me, having many options for schools allowed me freedom to narrow my choices as I progressed instead of being boxed in early in the process. Because I was keeping my options open, deciding to apply to Wheaton after visiting was easy.

Before visiting, I had already heard about Wheaton’s reputation for rigorous academics, and I knew that I wanted to actually be challenged in my college career. Many of my peers were excited to attend colleges that would be “a breeze compared to high school,” but that mentality did not fit me! I wanted an undergraduate degree that would push me to excel and speak for itself in both grad school applications and job interviews. I know now that regardless whether I decide to attend law school or not, Wheaton will have given me the resources to open that door of opportunity in my future.

In my first two years at Wheaton, I’ve presented at a Writing Center conference and hope to write a Political Science paper this next year with a professor’s help. Beyond that, the connections, knowledge, and insight I’ve gained from similarly motivated peers and even alumni have also removed the mystery from grad school. When I was writing my own applications two years ago, I knew I wanted to select the school that would equip me for whatever my future may hold— Wheaton.
