Leonora Owsley - A Prayer for Friends

By Leonora Owsley '22

When I started thinking about life at college I had one consistent prayer; I longed for friends. I avoided enormous state schools because I was worried that they would be too impersonal. Thankfully, my dad’s job made it easy to fly out to do college tours so I see for myself. What drew me to Wheaton was how much the school cared about intentional relationships.

I’d visited plenty of schools with friendly tour guides, friendly speeches from administration, and friendly class visits. But never had I met professors who within a few minutes expressed a deep interest in my passions and goals. Never had I met students who paid for my ice cream at midnight, or who woke up several hours early so I would have company at breakfast. Never had I attended a chapel that was neither forced nor sappy, but instead celebrated its visitors before moving on to deliver a meaningful service. Wheaton combines work ethic with intentional relationships, solid community, and godly mentoring. With a godly work ethic and quality friendships you can have a wonderful college experience just about anywhere, but I thank God that I’m having mine at Wheaton.
