Isaac Kyeremateng '22 - Community College Gap Year

By: Eli Ouoba '23

In my college search, I knew that I wanted to attend a Christian college. While in the medical field, I found Wheaton College, a Christ-centered liberal arts college with a strong pre-medical curriculum.

Before Wheaton, I was studying Medical Assisting Technology at a community college. After doing school and work nonstop for a few years, it was time to assess my path. I decided to take a gap year to travel and work full-time as a medical assistant. That year was formative in my faith and learning as I reflected on my educational and personal experiences. By the spring, it was finally confirmed: medicine was the path I wanted to take; a way I believed God would use for his kingdom work in me and in others. After another year at community college, I decided to transfer to Wheaton, a place where I could simultaneously pursue my pre-medical studies and pursue my faith in a context of learning.

For the past year, I have explored Wheaton’s strong academic resources, building on my experience and knowledge of the medical field. I practice many of the concepts taught in the classroom through labs and experiments. I have sat with and heard the stories of speakers such as Dr. Lance Plyler, who was part of a medical team to Liberia during the 2014 Ebola outbreak. I have also learned effective research methodologies, and I anticipate research opportunities in future.

Through my reflective gap year and my studies at Wheaton, I head towards my calling as I passionately pursue my studies and look forward to future work in medicine!
