WheTEP Prerequisites

The Wheaton Teacher Education Program (WheTEP) requires initial screening before any student is accepted and eligible to enroll in the appropriate methods courses.  WheTEP applications are due by Oct. 1 of the junior year, even if not student teaching until spring of the senior year. If one opts to student teach the fall after graduation, the WheTEP application would be due by Oct. 1 of the senior year.

They include:

A. Minimum Overall Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) of 2.50 (3.0 for M.A.T.)

B. Minimum G.P.A. of 2.50 (3.0 for M.A.T.) in EDUC 135, EDUC 136, EDUC 225 (or their transfer equivalents) and EDUC 305, with no grade lower than a “C-”

C. Minimum G.P.A. of 2.50 (3.0 for M.A.T.) in the candidate’s major

D. A grade of “C-” or better in any major, professional, or concentration course which will be counted toward teacher licensure

E. Acceptable performance on all performance assignments as specified in EDUC 135 and 136 and EDUC 225

F. Acceptable performance in the EDUC 136L/515L cross-cultural tutoring practicum as assessed by the candidate’s tutoring coordinator using the tutoring evaluation form

G. Acceptable performance in the EDUC 225L/521L teacher aiding practicum as assessed by the candidate’s cooperating teacher using the teacher aiding evaluation form

H. Acceptable completion of a reflective assignment based on the EDUC 225L/521L observations

I. A positive recommendation from the candidate’s major department

J. Successful completion of a WheTEP interview

K. An affirmation of appropriate dispositions as indicated by the evaluations of the candidate’s practicum performance and a formal vote of the faculty in the Department of Education

Items A-H are generally completed by the beginning of the junior year.

Other Criteria:

A. WheTEP application Completion

B. The candidate’s affirmation of freedom from any disqualifying legal convictions and a signed statement indicating that he/she will inform the Department of Education of any subsequent convictions

C. Submission to a fingerprint-based criminal background check required prior to methods practicum and/or student teaching.

D. Submission of TB test results prior to student teaching if required by the school district to which the candidate is assigned.
