Jerrod Tillotson M.A. '16
Jerrod Tillotson, M.A. '16 shares his experience at Wheaton and how it prepared him for his calling.
Why did you choose Wheaton?
Despite the relative newness of the MFT program at the time, all aspect of the program seemed to be functioning at a high level. The faculty were qualified, available, professional, and friendly. One of my higher priorities in choosing a program was figuring out which one would assist in developing how to integrate my faith in clinical practice. This program, as well as the school as a whole, is adept at providing the fertile ground necessary for dialogue and growth when it comes to working through the implications of the Christian faith and our professional careers. In addition to the quality of the program, and its emphasis on integration, is the community available on and off campus for those who are looking for it.
What skills have you learned from your program?
In the program, and since graduation, it has become clear to me that I have learned the skills necessary for professional and competent counseling. The program taught a range of practiced theories today, and aided me in finding the style and approach that best fits me as an individual counselor.
How has your program challenged you and prepared you for your vocation?
The Marriage & Family Therapy program challenged me academically as well as personally. A quality master's program for counseling will force you to look at yourself on a deeper level than you may have before, and that deeper look is a necessary step towards becoming a well-rounded counselor. This looked different for each student. I believe God has used my time at Wheaton to continue to shape and prepare me towards a calling that he is still forming.
What advice can you give for students who are also considering the M.A. Marriage & Family Therapy Program at Wheaton College Graduate School?
Wheaton is an excellent school where there are ample opportunities to get involved in campus life if you wish to do so, and it is still excellent if your life is already busy, and you only have time to commute in and out for classes. If you choose Wheaton, I advise you to get to know your professors well, regardless of the program you choose. If you have the time, attend lectures that are outside of your degree and get to know students outside of your program.
Graduate Chapel is an excellent space to meet other students. It is also a good idea to get involved in a local church if you intend to move into the Wheaton area, and not commute. Visit the campus if you have the ability to do so, it is beautiful in any season. If you attend Wheaton, and choose the Marriage & Family Therapy program, be ready to be challenged and encouraged. The requirements for graduation may seem daunting, but they are achievable.
