International Travel Clinic
International Travel Clinic (ITC)
The mission of the International Travel Clinic (ITC) is to educate students on how to live healthy while traveling internationally.
Traveling to different countries can be exciting. However, when you travel, whether it be to a tropical or less exotic destination or to a developing or industrial country, you may be exposed to new air and water quality, food, illnesses, or even safety issues. Some countries have diseases that are preventable by vaccines, a good water filter, proper food selection, and awareness of your surroundings. The ITC's goal is to keep you healthy while you travel and ensure that you leave your international community healthy and safe as well.
International Travel Appointments:
Wheaton College students who plan on traveling internationally, whether personally or with a Wheaton College program, can consult with a trained medical professional at the ITC. The consultation includes a detailed review of the location, activities, available resources, and the individual physical and mental health needs of the student. The ITC is staffed by nurses trained in travel health and utilizes the Travax Travel Medicine Program from Shoreland to inform and update students about health and travel conditions including required and/or recommended immunizations. The nurse reviews and assesses: medications needed for the travel experience, immunizations, food and water safety, climate issues, insects or animals to avoid, prevalent diseases, personal safety, blood borne pathogen training, and the political environment of the countries being visited.
The ITC is always up to date with regard to current emerging diseases, immunizations, treatments, and medications, following standards of medical care given by the following regulatory organizations: ASTHM, ISTM, CDC Travel and Shoreland Travax software.
