About Williston Hall: Upperclass Residence Hall at Wheaton College
Just steps from Blanchard Hall, Williston Hall is Wheaton’s oldest residence hall, built in 1895. This historic building houses 61 upperclass students on one women's floor and two men's floor in a variety of double and triple rooms, each with its own unique style.
Over the years, it was known by many names—including the Women’s Building, Ladies Hall, and Red Castle—before receiving its current name in 1933 to honor John Payson Williston: inventor of indelible ink, committed abolitionist, friend of Jonathan Blanchard, and generous supporter of the College.
In 1937, Williston became home to Ruth Bell Graham ’43, who would later marry Billy Graham ’43. A full renovation in 1994 preserved the hall’s rich legacy while adding modern comforts, including the Ruth Bell Graham Prayer Room on the fourth floor—a quiet space that reflects her enduring influence on the Wheaton community.
