The Science of Perry the Mastodon
Carbon-14 analysis of bone and wood buried with the skeleton dates the age of the mastodon to about 13,500 years before present. The animal was probably a female of the species, based upon maturity and size of the skeleton. The bones were recovered from an ancient lake or pond deposit, suggesting that the animal somehow fell into the water, could not escape, and drowned. There is no conclusive evidence of the animal having been hunted or scavenged by humans or predators.
