About the Growing Faith Together Project To empower parents and caregivers in family faith formation by leveraging the power of camp experiences.

This project is a four-year, nationwide, cross-denominational initiative coordinated by the HoneyRock Center for Leadership Development of Wheaton College. Generously funded by Lilly Endowment Inc., the project focuses on fostering faith through a series of key partnerships: among parents and caregivers, between camps, congregations, and the home, connecting practitioners with academia, and bridging different Christian traditions. We are bringing together a diverse group of scholars and practitioners from Lutheran, United Methodist, and Evangelical backgrounds, drawing on their rich experience in camp ministry, clergy roles, and academic settings.

Growing Faith Together Resource Bank

These resources are designed to strengthen connections between camps, churches, and families.

Use these tools to quickly onboard permanent or summer staff, jump-start onsite training days, or give parents before, during, or after their camper is attending their session.

NEW | Reframing Summer Camp

This resource talks about how church leadership can help reframe the role of summer camp in faith formation.

For some church leaders, Christian summer camps rank high on the list of recommended youth experiences. For others the feelings are more mixed. Often, those church leaders have seen campers come back to church with a case of the “post camp blues” and a sense of disillusionment with ‘normal’ life...

By Covenant Point, a Project Partner

When we create sacred rhythms in our lives...

  • It’s easier to see the sacred in others, ourselves, and the world around us.
  • We are more formed into the parents God created us to be.
  • Our children receive the support, encouragement, and purpose needed to flourish.

Maximizing the Impact of Camp by Engaging the Five Phases of Temporary Community

Part of what makes camp special is that it is a temporary experience. It is not meant to last forever, even though sometimes we want it to. In order to get the most out of camp, it can be helpful to understand how temporary community works...

Engaging Parents During Camp

We want to go beyond keeping parents informed about their camper’s experience and instead, equip them with the tools to continue the learning and skill-building back at home and in the church.

Building Bridges: Transferring Campers' New Skills to Home and Church

When your camper comes home, especially if they are in high school and have been at camp for more than two weeks, they likely have changed for the better and may have developed and applied new leadership skills at camp...

Together, we will develop a model program that enables camps to be training centers that equip parents and congregations to maximize the impact of camp-like experiences in developing resilient faith and maturity in their youth.

Throughout human history, God has used time away in temporary community to deepen faith, renew the people of God, and equip them for impact in critical historic moments. Prophets, kings, the nation of Israel, families, and Jesus’ own disciples were transformed and prepared through Spirit-led times away. Christian camping, at its core, performs a similar role in today’s world. The key characteristics and lasting impacts of Christian camping experiences are well- established, with a growing body of literature and scholarship confirming their value and potential. Growing Faith Together will build on this research and seek to deepen the impacts of camp experiences.

This project will capitalize on the power of camp by equipping families and churches to deepen resilient faith in youth through an evidence-based action-research process. The project team will identify program elements, rhythms, faith practices, and training processes that impact youth directly and improve the partnership between camps, churches, and families. So often, the powerful faith experiences of camp are not understood, transferred to, or capitalized on by the permanent systems. We seek to help parents maximize the impact of these deeply transformational experiences and continue the lessons learned and growth into everyday life.

Once tested and refined, this program will be shared with the Christian camp movement, through denominational training, in churches and with families across the country and around the world. The project team’s visibility, reputation, and prolific writing at the national and international level ensure global impact. As a result of this project, we hope that camps, in partnership with churches and parents, can become a more effective and pervasive catalyst for enduring faith formation, maturity, and leadership development in today’s youth and emerging adults.

Growing Faith Together Reports & Findings

Sharing what we're learning along the way.

NEW | Fall 2025 Findings Report: Family Faith Practices & Church Partner Interventions

This report includes data primarily from the third time point (three – four months after camp) and is intended to give some insight as to the longitudinal impact of camp...

Parent Beliefs and Engagement in Summer Camp

This report seeks to collect longitudinal data over four time points. It includes data primarily from the second time point (post camp) and is intended to help inform your camps post summer evaluation process. It measures parent perceptions, camper impact, and parent engagement with camp during the summer.

Promising Camp Strategies that Influence Family Faith Practices

Our analysis resulted in six themes, outlined in this report as “promising strategies.” Two of these strategies relate to camp philosophy, one each to the three key audiences identified in the study, and the final one to camp leadership.

Phase 1.4 Site Visit Thematic Summary

In summer 2024, six members of the Rhythms of Faith team conducted 11 visits to camps across the USA to investigate promising camp strategies for influencing family faith formation.
