Placement Testing

Placement Test Information

If you plan to take a language class to fulfill the language competency requirement for graduation, you need to take a Placement Test before you register with few exceptions. Placement Tests are only given in languages taught at Wheaton College by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages. They are intended to place you in a language class with other students who share your language skills.

1. Determine your need for a Placement Test

Placement tests are required for all students intending to complete their language competency requirement for graduation via language study at Wheaton College unless you plan to learn a new language you have never studied. Register for a 101 Elementary I class if you will be learning a new language. Please note, 101 Elementary I classes are only offered in the fall semester and 102 Elementary II classes are only offered in the spring.

If you have questions or are unsure if you need to take the Placement Test, please contact Elise Bock, Testing Coordinator.

Language Placement Tests offered include:

  • Français (French)
  • ἡ ἑλληνική γλῶσσα (Koine Greek)
  • Deutsch (German)
  • שְׂפָה עִבְרִית (Ancient Hebrew)
  • Español (Spanish)
  • 中文 (Mandarin Chinese)

2. Register for a language placement test

The test instructions will be emailed to you within minutes of submitting the online registration form. If you do not receive the instructions, do not register again as this will incur a second registration fee. Instead, check your spam folder, and if the instructions are not there, email Elise Bock, Testing Coordinator. Upon confirming that your registration form was received, you will receive instructions via email. If you have issues over the weekend, during a break or on a holiday, you may need to wait until the next business day to receive the emailed test instructions.

  • You are also strongly encouraged to register for a language class within a year of taking the Placement Test to avoid incurring another fee to re-take the test at a later date.
  • You may take a placement test in more than one language but you will need to fill out a separate registration form for each language.
